What counts as a fever: The threshold depends on the method, which is why a number from one method cannot be compared against a number from another. Rectal is 100.4 degrees F. Oral is 99.6 degrees F. Underarm is 98.6 degrees F. Rectal is the method used for babies and young children, up to around age three, and it is the reading a pediatrician will usually ask you for.
Waiting for the final reading: There is a quick read at about ten seconds and a final reading at thirty. They are not the same number. If you take the ten-second figure and treat it as final, you will sometimes get a result that does not match what the doctor's office gets an hour later. Wait the full thirty seconds.
If your reading disagrees with the doctor's: Check placement before you assume the thermometer is at fault. Insert only as far as the manual says, keep the probe still and in contact, and keep your baby from squirming until the reading finishes. Then take it again and wait for the final number. Whatever the thermometer says, symptoms and behavior are what your pediatrician wants to hear about, so call them with your concerns rather than working from the number alone.
